My first blog post on my first anime blog, oh yeah. (An introduction, and a soundtrack)

Well, hello!

This is ahogegirl, it is great to meet you all. I started this blog primarily because I realised that I’ve been in denial about being an otaku for too long, so this blog acts as my acceptance. I hope my parents are as proud of me as I am. Upon the realisation that I’m an otaku (for anime), I decided to find an outlet to talk a bunch about it. My posting schedule? Irregular. But I’ll do my very best.

My first post is going to be a light-hearted one, acting almost as a soundtrack to my blog. And the subject? Openings. Anime openings are important; in many cases, they have served as the reason that I picked up a show, which sometimes may not have happened had the song not been so damn good.

Without further ado, I present…the top 20 of my favourite anime openings. These are really in no particular order, besides the top 3.

20: A CRUEL ANGEL’S THESIS – NEON GENESIS EVANGELION

Possibly the most famous anime opening of all time, and with good reason. It’s ridiculously catchy and fun to sing. Admittedly, I only watched NGE after practicing this song religiously on osu!, but god damn, was that a good decision. The show may be legendary, but ‘A Cruel Angel’s Thesis’ may just match Evangelion’s level of iconicness.

19: HITORIGOTO – EROMANGA SENSEI

*repeats* Anime is trash, and so am I. Yes, like everyone else in 2017, I too watched Eromanga Sensei. Whilst the show left a lot to be desired (and believe me, it left a lot), there was no denying how catchy the shows opening was. And really, what person, anime fan or not, can resist cute dancing Sagiri in the opening sequence? Just ignore those police sirens in the distance.

18: BON VOYAGE! – ONE PIECE

Whilst I may have passed the mark of ‘casual’ in regards to being an anime fan, I am still relatively new to the big franchises, such as One Piece. At the time of writing, I just hit episode 180. I have a daunting journey. However, the journey is wonderfully fun, and One Piece’s soundtrack makes it all the more enjoyable. Bon Voyage perfectly captures the fun atmosphere of the Straw Hats adventure to find the One Piece, and brings you along with it.

17: UNRAVEL – TOKYO GHOUL

Another show where the OP was infinitely better than the show itself, because, wow. Unravel was insanely good, with the haunting vocals and awesome key changes throughout the song. Tokyo Ghoul was one of the first shows I ever watched, and despite not remembering a lot about the show itself, Unravel was so good that it’ll likely stick with me for a long time after I forget Tokyo Ghoul completely.

15: KUUSOU MESOROGIWI – MIRAI NIKKI

What IS IT with anime having openings sometimes better than the show itself? Though, I won’t lie to you all, I enjoyed at least the first half of Mirai Nikki a lot. Coincidentally, this opening was for the first half. But really, who can blame anyone for getting down to this? Sing it with me… EINS ZWEI DREI.

14: WHAT’S UP PEOPLE?! – MAXIMUM THE HORMONE

Everyone’s seen Death Note. However, not everyone agrees on this opening. In fact, it’s widely hated more often than it’s loved. To that, I say THEIR LOSS. Not only does the absolutely bonkers nature of the song reflect Light Yagami’s mental state, but how much fun is it to attempt to sing along? I also have a soft spot for death metal, so really. This song is great for me.

13: JIRIKI HONGAN – ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM

God, something about Assassination Classroom always gets me with a lump in my throat. Which seems ridiculous, considering how upbeat this opening is (and hilarious to think about the lyrics that are actually being sang). And god damn it, look at my boys Karma and Itona dancing oh so carefree like they’re not training to be assassins? I just really like this song, guys.

12. WE ARE! – ONE PIECE

I may be somewhat new to the world of One Piece, but I have truly fallen head over heels. And like the rest of the fanbase, We Are! holds a place dear in my heart. Look at the old crew! Aaah! Oooh! And to think this was before best boy was even introduced. Try not to sing along, even hum along. This is everything a first opening for a very long show should be.

11. RANBU NO MELODY – BLEACH

Oh, Bleach. This was my first anime, since I watched it as a kid. Even though I could tell that the show lost its way, you know what never did? Bleach’s openings. This was #13, and look. It’s the best one in the whole show. I guess it NEARLY makes up for half of the episode count being filler…

10. DEEP IN ABYSS – MADE IN ABYSS

I’m a sucker for character songs, but more than that, I’m a sucker for Reg’s seiyuu singing character songs. A very recent addition, but a very worthwhile one. In this case though, really guys, the opening is great, but the anime is 100x better. I’m far too late to review, but everyone else could tell you – Made in Abyss was breathtaking.

9. RESONANCE – SOUL EATER

Here’s some bias: Soul Eater is my #3 anime of all time. However, I found the first few episodes pretty slow, and the reason I persisted was this BANGING opening. I have headbanged approximately 4 times typing this. Wait, there was another one. Damn it.

8. RAP IS A MAN’S SOUL – TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN

“But ahogegirl! This isn’t Gurren Lagann’s opening!” I know, TTGL holds my #2 spot. However, what’s the first song you think of when you think of Gurren Lagann? What encompasses the GAR of Gurren Lagann better than Rap is a Man’s Soul? Let me see you GRIT THOSE TEETH! Fight the powah.

7. HISTORY MAKER – YURI!!! ON ICE

Oh boy, did I love Yuri On Ice? I essentially planned my Wednesday evenings around it. That first paint splash, and you betcha I was there, foaming at the mouth at the thought of potential Viktuuri, and the excitement that I could ACTUALLY SING ALONG. No broken Japanese here! This song is fun, Yuri on Ice is fun. Stop denying yourselves.

6. PAPER MOON – SOUL EATER

This pips Resonance, barely. Paper Moon perfectly captures the change in tone as the characters get thrown into a considerably darker situation than at the start. The foreshadowing near the end of the sequence too…ooh. You feel that? Goosebumps.

5. AGAIN – FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD

I dare anyone to say that anything about this show wasn’t a masterpiece. Again really does stand out against the others, though. Maybe it’s because it’s the first? Maybe because it’s just THAT good? You decide.

4. GUREN NO YUMIYA – ATTACK ON TITAN

Did I really make a favourite openings post without this? Come on. This is iconic. I use it for working out, walking like a badass, going into war…I mean, what?! But seriously, whatever your view on Attack on Titan, you can’t deny a great song.

3. SORA NI UTAEBA – BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA

You wanna know how I know this song was great? Besides the fact it came from BnHA, it also made it to semi-famous memedom. We did it, guys. The normies are aware. But what better song TO make them aware, and perfect fit for the last adapted arc, too. We have been so blessed with BnHA.

2. DEPARTURE! – HUNTER x HUNTER (2011)

HxH is my #1 anime, which probably explains why the opening is so high. Besides it being great, of course. Whilst the show infamously gets darker as it progresses, the opening will always remind you that you can always ‘SMIIIIIIIIIIILE AGAIN’. Phew.

1. FLYERS – DEATH PARADE

Oh boy, is this funky. AND MISLEADING. I had no idea what I was going into, but did it anyway because I liked the OP so much. What a great decision. Another rare case where the opening was actually just as good as the anime itself. Please watch Death Parade, even if not just for the opening.

And that concludes my list! I kind of rushed near the end, as I have to go to work, but let me know your thoughts! What have I missed? Which song do you love the most?

Love,

Ahogegirl xo
