What I’m Watching: Summer 2018

Hello all! With another season down (and a lot of half written reviews in my backlog – bear with me!), it’s that time again where I’ll be looking over the Summer 2018 list and picking out what I’ll be dedicating my time to!

Aside from new shows, I’ll also be continuing Boku no Hero Academia season 3, Black Clover and Piano no Mori.

Phew. So, what awaits me during the sunny season?

Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3

Of course, the obvious. As someone who got into anime because of Attack on Titan, of course I’m still following the hype 4 years later. Every episode has left me hungry for more – and we still have so many unanswered questions. What’s up with all these new titans? What’s in that basement? And what great theme song will Linked Horizon provide us with this time? Can we top SASAGEYO? Whatever happens, this is definitely the show I’m most excited to watch this season.

Free!: Dive to the Future

The other sequel that I am very excited for this season, is the third season of Free! It doesn’t share the same ‘unanswered questions’ hype like Attack on Titan does, but that certainly doesn’t dull my excitement in any way. For a start, I’m super psyched to see characters that I believed to be exclusive to the Free! movies return as the main cast this time around – more boys! Aside from that, I am looking forward to seeing a show that focuses on life past high school, as our main characters are now fully-fledged adults in the real (or college) world, something we don’t see nearly enough of in anime, let alone cute boys doing cute things anime. Hooray for future fish!

Now, this could be awful…or it could be charming. After being intrigued by the title (spooky hotsprings? Sure, why not), I decided to add this to my list. Maybe it’ll end up as your standard not-awful fanservice self-insert show of the season, or maybe it’ll show itself to be something special in the ecchi genre, with the supernatural element providing a unique spin. Supposedly, it does quite well in the Weekly Shounen Jump rankings, so I’m keeping my hopes high!

“A group of 3 yakuza failed their boss for the last time. After messing up an important job, the boss gave them 2 choices: honorably commit suicide, or go to Thailand to get a sex reassignment surgery in order to become “female” idols. After a gruesome year training to become idols, they successfully debut, with overwhelming popularity, much to their dismay. This is where their tragedy truly begins.” (from MyAnimeList)

Sounds god awful, offensive and a steaming hot mess. Sign me up.

When this got announced, anime and manga communities everywhere exploded with excitement, claiming its greatness. And sure enough, the manga is scored highly, with a score of almost 9/10. Safe to say, I was intrigued about what exactly everyone was so excited about. The synopsis reads almost like a typical American coming-of-age comedy (which is probably my favourite movie genre), except with a scuba diving setting. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what this adaptation will bring!

Wow, what a cute sounding title! And the main character looks adorable. Probably just some moe…oh, tagged with ‘horror’? Huh. If Backstreet Girls is going to provide me with negative shocks this season, I’m hoping Happy Sugar Life shocks me in the good way. That can’t be the face of a ruthless killer…right?

Truth be told, I’m not a huge badminton fan. The sport is a little dull to me, or at least in non-anime form. However, it’s not that often we get female sports anime, and even less often that it’s not ecchi. This selling point is unique enough that Hanebado! got my attention. I’ll definitely try for a few weeks.

From the synopsis and the design, for some reason, this show reminds me of both Scooby Doo and Soul Eater. I love Soul Eater half to death, and as for Scooby Doo…well. It used to be pretty great, with some interesting villain designs, so I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of supernatural beings we’ll investigate!

I will most likely check out some more things based on recommendation during the season, but this is what I’m settling on for now!

What shows will you guys be checking out this Summer, and what should I watch that I’ve missed? Let me know!

If you enjoy my content and wish to support me, please consider buying me a Ko-Fi!

Until next time!

  1. This is good-looking lineup. I can’t tell if Backstreet Girls is gonna be a waste of time or not, so I’ll probably skip out on that one until it’s finished airing, but we’re definitely adding AoT season 3 to the podcast Week In Review. We don’t have a third have a third series picked yet, but I think I’ll push for either Happy Sugar Life or Jashin-chan Dropkick. Both look like they could be very entertaining in very different ways.

Season 3 of Overlord, Hanebado, and Hataraku Saibou will probably be the other few that I watch just because, but I wish I had time for ALL OF THEM. There are so many to try to choose from.

  2. Didn’t even know about Happy Sugar Life until reading this post. Reading your impressions immediately triggered flashbacks to School Live!. I’m both excited/scared to be victim to excellent contrasting of fluffy and horrifying aspect
