I actually have 3 posts for this challenge in the back log, but WOW. Do I need to talk about Seikon no Qwaser. Wasting time watching this awful, steaming turd has made me alter the rules of my challenge, too. When I was initially only to count anime I completed, if I ever get anything as awful as Qwaser again, I can’t commit to it. Let’s get this over with.
WARNING: Due to the nature of this anime, this review is 100% NOT SAFE FOR WORK.
SEIKON NO QWASER (THE QWASER OF STIGMATA)
“At St. Mihailov Academy, a series of serial murders have taken place with all the victims being young women. Who is this rampant culprit? And which beautiful maiden will fall prey to his evil next?
After a horrible day of being harassed by their classmates, the adopted sisters Mafuyu Oribe and Tomo Yamanobe stumble across an injured young man and decide to bring him back to their place to recover. That very night, Mafuyu ends up at the mercy of the infamous serial killer. Strangely, he demands not her life, but instead an icon left behind by Tomo’s father.
Luckily, Sasha, the mysterious young man that the sisters had taken in, comes to the rescue just in time, helping Mafuyu avoid the same fate as the other victims. Sasha reveals that he is a Qwaser, an individual capable of controlling scientific elements by partaking in Soma, a miraculous essence found within the breasts of women. Capable of manipulating iron, Sasha crafts a giant scythe and slays the serial killer. He enrolls in the academy the next day signalling the beginning of a very “interesting” school year.” (From MyAnimeList)
I really, REALLY tried hard not to drop this. Truth be told, I totally forgot what it was when I saw the title. Then, when I saw the synopsis, I was…apprehensive? Shall we say? And it did it’s damn best to confirm my worst fears that this would be horrible.
Now, if you’re one of the people who enjoys anime for the big, bouncing ‘plot’, then by all means, watch Qwaser. That’s probably the only thing the anime is good for. If you want big boobed anime girls, look no further.
Obviously, these boobs are supported by a teeny, tiny bra because physics.
It’s not because it’s an ecchi that I’m slamming Seikon no Qwaser. I’ve enjoyed plenty of ecchi shows in my time watching anime. For a show in the battle-harem-ecchi genre for example, I unironically and shamelessly enjoyed High School DxD. Whilst shows like DxD obviously use the extreme fanservice as its main pull, it doesn’t rely on this entirely, resulting in it being a fairly decent show at the end of the day. The battles can be taken seriously as….pretty okay, as far as a battle harem can go. But my god, you just CANNOT take the battles seriously in Qwaser. I mean.
How can you take any fight that starts with MC-Kun suckling on a titty seriously? Sure, he was doing it to extract precious ‘soma’, which gives him the power to fight. But, for goodness sake. You’d think with this ancient practice, they’d have found a better way to extract it. Not to mention that when the fighting actually happened, it was simply a little bit of swish and flick before it ended. No big climax, no rewarding conclusion. It just…was. Disappointing, just like everything else in Seikon no Qwaser.
I’ve been trying to think of something I enjoyed about this show, but I can’t. I was far too naive and optimistic that this could – god forbid, be something I enjoyed. Granted, whilst I may not be the target audience, I still can’t find the appeal. Maybe if they focused on making characters with more personality than a piece of cardboard, and stopped taking itself so seriously, maybe this could’ve passed for an at least halfway decent anime.
My score: 3/10 – DROPPED. If this was 1 cour, I could’ve pushed through. But 2 cours of this is nightmare inducing.
5/50 Anime watched in 2018.
What was your opinion on Seikon no Qwaser? How do you guys feel about ecchi in general, particularly if you’re out of the target audience? Let me know!
Until next time!
Seikon no Qwaser? If I recall I didn’t make it through episode 1. Then again I’d gone in blind. Since then I’ve read quite a bit about it and I’m not regretting my decision to not watch this one through.
