[CHALLENGE] 4/50 Anime Completed in 2018: Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai

You know, you can always tell how awful I placed in the current season of Overwatch, by how much time I spend away from my blog trying to make up for it…but no matter! In my time away, I watched a show that unexpectedly stole my heart.

“Keima Katsuragi, known online as the legendary “God of Conquest,” can conquer any girl’s heart—in dating sim games, at least. In reality, he opts for the two-dimensional world of gaming over real life because he is an unhealthily obsessed otaku of galge games (a type of Japanese video game centered on interactions with attractive girls).

When he arrogantly accepts an anonymous offer to prove his supremacy at dating sim games, Keima is misled into aiding a naïve and impish demon from hell named Elucia “Elsie” de Lute Ima with her mission: retrieving runaway evil spirits who have escaped from hell and scattered themselves throughout the human world. Keima discovers that the only way to capture these spirits is to conquer what he hates the most: the unpredictable hearts of three-dimensional girls! Shackled to Elsie via a deadly collar, Keima now has his title of “God of Conquest” put to the ultimate test as he is forced to navigate through the hearts of a multitude of real-life girls.” (From MyAnimeList)

From such a ridiculous synopsis, I have to say I wasn’t all that excited. I figured it’d just be another self insert, bland MC harem anime, with not much to offer. Luckily, I was proved very wrong. The show was aware that in order to have a bearable harem, the centre has to be at least likeable.

So our protagonist may not be as handsome as Kirito (though he could definitely challenge him for gaming God status), or as ‘normal average high school boy’ as Issei, but Keima is a fantastic protagonist. He’s arrogant – despite admitting himself he’s horrible with 3D girls, he keeps a cool head, and is overall a pretty great person. It’s easy for characters like Keima to fall into ‘smug asshole’ category, but luckily, you find yourself rooting for him the entire time. In fact, there were very few – if any characters that I found myself disliking. Shoutout to the cutest demon from the underworld…ever.

Aside from the great characters, the comedy was also perfect. Kami Nomi focused on parodying the harem genre, something that is difficult to do, but if done correctly, can create perfection. For Kami Nomi, they leaned on the side of perfection. The character interactions were great, the banter bouncing off one another almost effortlessly. The show also poked far at a lot of other shows in the genre, as well as the fans of the show itself.

Oh, and a shoutout to the opening, too. I’ve never heard anything like it, but safe to say: I’m hooked.

And there’s another show down! What did you guys think of Kami Nomi? Are you a fan of harems in general?

Let me know!

My rating: 8/10

Anime completed: 4/50

Until next time!

  1. I’ve been intending to watch TWGOK for quite a while solely because I love all of Kanon’s songs *heart eyes*

Glad to hear that you think pretty much exactly what everyone else tells me about it~ Definitely keeping it on my radar!
