I really have less than a week left of this?! Say what? It seems to have flown by, and it doesn’t seem like a chore to be in a regular posting schedule, which was my goal. Hooray!
SPOILER WARNING FOR TODAY’S POST: MAJOR HUGE SPOILERS FOR MADE IN ABYSS. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN MADE IN ABYSS YET STOP SCROLLING
DAY 24 – MOMENT THAT SHOCKED YOU THE MOST IN ANY ANIME
Maybe not the most EVER, but recency bias strikes. Made in Abyss’ last few episodes absolutely killed me. I don’t know if my hands spent more time over my eyes or my mouth. Whilst there were a lot of significantly awful events in Made in Abyss, the one that springs to mind is the backstory of Nanachi.
She is super adorable, I know. Unfortunately, how she became so cute isn’t such a nice thing to think about. We are told over and over again about the horrors of the Abyss, but it isn’t until we meet Nanachi that we truly understand just what the true terror of the task Riko and Reg take on is.
Nanachi was in fact a normal girl, just like Riko before she became Nanachi. Her and her friend, Mitty were chosen to take part in some experiments. The experiments were to test the limits of the Abyss, and what the effects of going back up too fast – or at all would be. Becoming a bunny (or a Hollow, as Nanachi tells us) may not be so bad…but just look at what became of Mitty.
And as if Mitty’s actual transformation wasn’t shocking enough – we find out that she is still conscious and alive as prior Mitty inside. But due to regenerative abilities – a side effect of the Abyss, she cannot die, and lives every day in excruciating pain. The realisation was….horrifying, for lack of better word. I don’t get rendered speechless often but, wow.
What was the most shocking moment for you? Did you too get tricked into thinking Made in Abyss would be a fun adventure, only to have your heart ripped out? Let me know.
Until next time!
I wanted to read this article, but Made in Abyss is up next for me! I stalled early on, despite seeing the signs that this was going to turn into something terrific, but all the critical acclaim has me going back.
By the way, my answer to this question would be that famed moment in Claymore—it remains with me all these years later, and was strong enough to encourage me, one who rarely reads manga, to keep up with that series up through the very end.

Oh, I’m excited to see what you think of it! It completely blew me away – though I’m sure that’s what everyone says.
I haven’t seen Claymore yet! Oops.

Claymore, the anime, is not worth watching haha. It has an infamously bad anime-only ending that kinda ruins it, and time has passed the series by anyway.
Thanks for the further encouragement to watch the show! I’m eager to dive back in.

Claymore the anime was created before they finished serializing the manga, if you have the time the manga is worth reading. If you like berserk you’ll love claymore
